I can use further
prefixes and suffixes and understand the guidelines for adding them
|
A
suffix is an element that can be added to a root word to change its meaning.
In the coming week we are going to be focusing on ‘vowel suffixes’. Examples of
these include:
-ment
meaning ‘an action or process’
-ful
meaning ‘full of’
-less
meaning ‘without’
-ship
meaning ‘condition, character or skill’
-ly
meaning ‘a characteristic of something else’.
We need to remember the general rules used to help us add
these suffixes:
|
|
When a word ends with ‘y’ change it to an ‘i’ EXCEPT when the suffix is ‘ing’.
Example: accompany à accompaniment
|
|
When a word ends with a
vowel before the ‘y’ keep the ‘y’.
Example: enjoy à enjoyment
|
|
When a word ends in ‘ce’ or ‘ge’, keep the ‘e’ if the
suffix begins with ‘a’ or ‘o’.
Example: price à priceless
|
|
For some words, we can
simply add the suffix without having to make any adjustments to the root
word.
Example: conscious à consciously
|
|
As
with most rules in the English language, there are exceptions to the rules. You
will need to learn if any words do not follow these patterns.
Below
are a number of root words taken from the year 5/6 curriculum list and key
words from different parts of the curriculum that you can practice adding the
following suffixes to.
Your
child may be tested on any of these words (with any of the suffixes above) at
the end of the week so please support them in exploring which rules to apply
to transform each word so they are prepared and ready for anything!
Many
thanks,
Miss
Barrell and Mr Storr
