Friday thoughts...

Friday 17th November 2017

Well, it’s been another busy week but we’d like to start off by saying how nice it is to see so many children reading. More and more of you are reading and getting your logs signed daily which is really encouraging, so keep up the good work!

This week in maths we have really enjoyed looking at factors, multiples and prime numbers. We have also looked at prime factors so this week’s homework is all about that. We will put some supporting materials up on the class blogs, but otherwise, if you need any help, just come and see one of us and we will be happy to go over things.

Lastly, it has been lovely to see so many people supporting our Children in Need fundraising effort, making donations and coming in non-uniform, showing off their spots just like Pudsey! By assembly we had raised over £200 so a huge thank you to you all for that too!

That’s it for this week so have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Spellings, WC:20th November 2017

WC 20/11/17
I can spell words that end in:
Ø  –ant, -ance, -ancy
Ø  -ent, -ence, -ency

We use –ant and –ance/-ancy if there’s a related word with the a sound or if the root ends in –ation this is often a clue.
1.  We use –ent and –ence/ -ency after a soft c (sounds like s), soft g and qu.
2. There are some exceptions where this guidance does not work; we just have to learn those words.

Below are a number of words that you will need to learn over the coming week. Your child may be tested on any of these words at the end of the week (to a maximum of 10) so please support them in exploring them so they are prepared and ready for anything!

Don’t forget to keep learning the core 5/6 words as these will be tested at random. Each week we will choose 2 words from the core word list in addition to the week’s spelling focus words.

Many thanks,

Miss Barrell and Mr Storr

Pupil job vacancies

Hi everyone,

Mrs Tanner explained today that she has some job vacancies for pupils around school. In order to get these jobs, pupils need to formally apply just as you would when you apply for jobs after you leave school.
We have discussed how to write a formal letter of application in class but I also promised I would put additional guidance on the blog here, so below I have copied an example letter of application which you can use to help you get the tone and structure right. Be careful with your presentation too- first impressions count!

The job vacancies available are:
  • Play leaders
  • Digital leaders
  • Office crew
I hope this is of some help to you all and I know Mrs Tanner will be looking forward to receiving your applications from Monday.

GOOD LUCK!!

Miss Barrell

    Rotary Writing Competition...

    Hi all!

I come with very exciting news... We have been invited to submit entries for an annual writing competition which has proved very popular with Hull schools over the last five years: The Rotary Writing Competition!

This year is an open competition and children are asked to write a story of no more than 700 words about any subject they wish. The topic is not restricted so children can let their imaginations fly and write about anything that interests them.
The judges will be looking for a piece of creative writing which captures the reader’s interest through imaginative ideas and use of interesting vocabulary.

    Prizes up for grabs include:
    • 5 prizes of £20 awarded to the writers of the top 5 stories
    • The writer of the overall winning story will also receive a trophy
    • The school of the overall winner will also receive a trophy

Entries must be hand written and must be submitted by no later than this Friday 17th November; schools will be notified of the results before the end of term.

Please ensure you include the following information on your entries at the top righthand corner of the first page:
    • Child’s name
    • Age
    • School is written

I cannot wait to read your entries and get them sent off!
Let me know if you want any advice/ support- my door is always open!

    Tom's Midnight Garden

This week we started reading our new class text: Tom's Midnight Garden.

We're really enjoying the story so far and it has already inspired some fantastic writing from us as we have taken on the role of Tom Long, the main character, to write a letter back to our brother Peter who has measles to tell him all about life with Aunt Gwen and Uncle Alan...
